Valparaiso Library

Valparaiso's current librarian is Iris Schlotman.  There has been a lot more reading going on in Valparaiso.  This is thanks to the money from three separate grants given to Valparaiso Public Library, Iris has been able to purchase over 80 new books.  Iris Schlotman had an open house on September 15, 1999 to showcase all of the new books that she received.  Two of the three grants were received to get only children's books.  The first of the two grants was from the Library foundation.   The foundation said that every dollar the library makes the foundation will donate two dollars. The library raised $200 through a book and a bake sale on June 5.

The Library Foundation then gave them $400 so she was able to buy $600 worth of new children's books.  This translates into 38 fiction and nonfiction books.  Iris Schlotman was very pleased.  To thank the entire community for all they did, Schlotman said she was planning to make a quilt and hang it in the library.  The second grant came from the Eastern Library System and was for $500.  The final grant was also from the Eastern Library System.  It provided $165 to purchase consumer health books.

Valparaiso's library has gone through many other changes besides this one.  The Valparaiso Library is part of the Saunder's County Cooperative.   It was formed to allow local libraries to be computerized and will let books be checked out by anyone in the entire county.  Schlotman said that they have really expanded the book selection people will have.  Another change has been that the town is working to become an accredited library.  In order for this to happen they need to open a a certain number of hours.  The library is only open 8 hours a week.  The library hopes that these hours will soon increase.  The next change to the library is starting in October the community will not have to pay a $10 library card fee.   Although people in rural areas will be required to.  The change is due to local funding.

The libraries operating hours are:
