SHANAHAN MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL INC.
SME was established in 1958 by Tom and Marvin Shanahan (Brothers). The small town of Valparaiso became the homestead for their store which handled plumbing and electrical supplies. As time went on so did the construction industry, and the supply store also started installing plumbing, heating, and electrical in residences around the Valparaiso area.

In 1974, Shanahan Mechanical and Electrical was Incorporated. This then lead the skilled company into the commercial job market. Not only did the size of the company grow, but also the diversity and quality of the work. All of the strength of SME has been derived from a combination of hard work, dedication, and quality workmanship. Even though SME is now one of the largest Contractors in the Midwest, it is still a family business. They are recognized as individuals who are trying to attain their own personal goals. |
Another quality of SME is their reputation. Since the early years of SME, they have
been building professional working relationships with many of the businesses and industry
in the South East Nebraska area. This has helped them grow and serve the area to the
fullest. As they approach the turn of the century, they find themselves challenged
with more and more everday. The increased awareness towards the enviroment, natural
resources, and energy usage has also played an important role in their future. At
SME, they are constantly monitoring and evaluating our production to prevent wasting
materials and conserve energy. They also have invested a substantial amount of time
and money in the safety of our employees. They are the ones that compose SME. SME
has 35 employees which have worked 5-10 years. 20 employees which have worked 10-15
years, and 18 employees which have worked 15-26 years. Some of completed projects
finished by SME are the UNL Student Union, St. Elizabeth's and Lincoln General Hospitals,
Wayne State College Utilites, College of Business at UNL and Arbor Day
Lodge in Nebraska City.
